The 'TiN' coating on an Osborn drill bit is a hard, gold-coloured surface treatment applied to the cutting area of the drill.
It reduces friction between the drill and workpiece, increases surface hardness and improves heat resistance, this in turn allows higher cutting speeds as well as significantly longer tool life compared to uncoated HSS bits.
TiN coated drills are particularly effective when drilling stainless steel, titanium and high-tensile alloys where heat build-up is a key problem.
Osborn manufacture three main types of machine tap:
Spiral Flute Taps - ejects chips back up the flute and are ideal for blind holes
Spiral Point Taps (gun nose taps) - pushes chips ahead of the cut and are best used in through holes
Roll Taps (form taps) - these displace material rather than cut it, producing a stronger thread with no chips and excellent surface finish.
Roll taps require approximately 10% more torque than cutting taps and are most effective in ductile materials such as mild steel, aluminium and copper.
