Frequently Asked Questions
Metalworking lubricants are specially formulated fluids, oils and compounds designed to reduce friction, dissipate heat, improve surface finish and extend tool life during machining and metal-forming operations.
They are applied at the cutting zone during processes such as turning, milling, drilling, tapping, grinding and boring, where they provide lubrication between the tool and workpiece, flush away chips and swarf and protect the machined surfaces from corrosion.
The right lubricant can significantly improve productivity, tool life and component quality.
This category includes several types of metalworking lubricant: water-based cutting fluids (also known as coolants or soluble oils), neat cutting oils (used undiluted), tapping and threading oils, grinding fluids, hand-applied cutting lubricants and fluid maintenance products such as sprays and compounds.
Each type is formulated for specific machining operations, materials & application methods and is available in a range of pack sizes from 300 ml aerosols and 1 litre bottles through to 20 litre and 205 litre drums.
Water-based cutting fluids are concentrates that are diluted with water before use, forming either an emulsion (milky appearance) or a solution (transparent). They provide excellent cooling due to water's high heat capacity, making them ideal for high-speed machining where heat dissipation is critical.
Neat cutting oils are used undiluted and provide superior lubricity and film strength, making them better suited to heavy-duty machining, low-speed operations and difficult-to-machine materials where lubrication is more important than cooling.
The best choice for your needs depends on the machining operation, material, speed and the balance of cooling vs lubrication required.
Semi-synthetic cutting fluids are a hybrid between soluble oils (which have a high mineral oil content) and full synthetics (which contain no mineral oil). They contain a reduced amount of refined mineral oil combined with synthetic additives, forming a micro-emulsion when mixed with water that is typically translucent.
Semi-synthetics offer a balance of good cooling (from the water phase), good lubrication (from the oil and additive package), excellent cleanliness and good corrosion protection. They are widely used in general-purpose machining across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Cutting fluids provide several critical benefits during machining:
They reduce friction between the tool and workpiece, which lowers cutting forces and heat generation;
They dissipate heat from the cutting zone, preventing thermal damage to the tool and workpiece
They improve surface finish by reducing built-up edge and chip welding
They flush chips and swarf away from the cutting area, preventing recutting and damage
They provide corrosion protection to the machined workpiece and machine tool.
Together, these benefits result in longer tool life, better component quality, higher feeds and speeds and reduced downtime.
Selecting the right cutting fluid involves considering several factors
The material being machined (ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless, aluminium, cast iron)
The machining operation (turning, milling, drilling, tapping, grinding)
The cutting speed and feed rate, the water quality available for mixing (soft, medium or hard water)
The machine tool's filtration and coolant system
Any health and safety or environmental requirements.
For general-purpose machining of steels and cast iron, a semi-synthetic fluid is a popular choice. For heavy-duty or low-speed operations a neat oil may be preferable.
For aluminium machining, a fluid with low staining potential is important.
If you need guidance, our engineering team can recommend the best product for your specific application.
Water quality is a critical factor in the performance and longevity of water-based cutting fluids.
The hardness of the water (measured in ppm of calcium carbonate) affects how the fluid emulsifies, its stability and its tendency to foam.
Most cutting fluids in this category are compatible with water qualities up to 400 ppm calcium carbonate hardness. In areas with very hard water, a fluid formulated for hard water (such as MTO Runcool ECO 4779) or the use of de-ionised or softened water may be necessary.
In areas with very soft water, anti-foam additives (such as those in MTO Runcool 431AF) help prevent excessive foaming in high-pressure systems.
Water-based cutting fluids can degrade through bacterial and fungal contamination, which causes unpleasant smells, slime formation and a loss of performance. This is typically caused by poor fluid maintenance such as low concentration, contamination with tramp oil (hydraulic or way oil leaking from the machine), stagnant fluid in unused machines, or poor housekeeping.
Regular monitoring of fluid concentration (using a refractometer), removal of tramp oil, aeration of the fluid and maintenance of the correct pH all help prevent bacterial growth.
Some fluids, such as the MTO Runcool range, are specifically formulated for high resistance to bacterial and fungal degradation.
Tramp oil refers to lubricating oils that leak from the machine tool's hydraulic systems, slideways or spindle bearings into the cutting fluid sump. Unlike the cutting fluid, tramp oil does not emulsify properly and floats on the surface where it can block oxygen transfer, promote bacterial growth, cause smoking and misting and interfere with the fluid's cooling and lubricating performance.
Regular removal of tramp oil using a skimmer or coalescer, along with good machine maintenance to reduce oil leaks is essential for maintaining cutting fluid health and extending its working life.
Neat cutting oils are used undiluted, straight from the container and are applied directly to the cutting zone. They are typically used for operations where lubrication is more critical than cooling, such as tapping, threading, broaching, deep-hole drilling, gear cutting and heavy-duty turning of tough materials.
Neat oils provide excellent film strength, extreme-pressure (EP) performance and rust protection and are particularly effective on high-alloy steels, stainless steel and other difficult-to-machine materials.
They also eliminate the mixing, maintenance and biological control issues associated with water-based fluids.
Tapping oils are highly concentrated lubricants specifically formulated for thread-cutting operations such as tapping, threading & reaming. These operations involve high friction and severe cutting conditions, as the tool is fully engaged with the workpiece.
Tapping oils contain high levels of extreme-pressure and lubricity additives that promote ease of cutting, prevent tap breakage, improve thread surface finish and extend tool life. They are available as neat oils for direct application or as thicker paste-like compounds for hand application.
For production tapping a dedicated tapping oil will consistently outperform a general-purpose cutting fluid.
