MTO Runcut CASF 32 Neat Cutting Oil

A neat cutting oil is used undiluted (straight from the drum, as supplied) unlike a soluble cutting fluid which is mixed with water before use. Neat oils carry their lubricity in the oil itself, which makes them the choice where lubrication and surface finish matter more than cooling: heavy turning, deep-hole boring, broaching, tapping, threading and gear cutting.

The trade-off is cooling. Water-mix soluble fluids shift heat far better than oil, so high-speed production work that generates a lot of heat is usually better served by a soluble fluid.

Neat oil wins where the cutting action is slow, arduous or precision-critical because the oil film protects the cutting edge and the workpiece surface in a way water-based fluids cannot match.

Choose neat oil when the operation is arduous rather than fast, things such as; deep-hole boring, broaching, heavy tapping, threading and gear cutting all benefit from the lubricating film a neat oil lays down on the cutting edge.

Neat oil is also the right call where a superior surface finish is required and where the machine is set up for oil and not designed to run water-mix fluid.

Soluble fluid is the better choice for high-speed, high-heat operations and continuous production where cooling dominates.

If you are running a sliding-head auto on small-diameter steel, a neat oil formulated for that work is the standard but if you are roughing steel on a CNC turning centre at high speed, a soluble fluid usually serves better. The operation decides.

Viscosity is the thickness of the oil (how readily it flows) and the grade numbers you see in this category (such as 6, 10, 14, 22 and 32) reflect that.

A lower-viscosity oil penetrates the cutting zone more easily and carries swarf away, suiting fine, high-speed work like sliding-head autos.

A higher-viscosity oil lays a thicker lubricating film, better for heavier, slower cuts where maximum lubricity is wanted.

The match is between viscosity and the operation. Light, fast work wants a low-viscosity oil that gets into the cut and drains cleanly. Heavy, arduous operations like broaching and deep-hole boring want a higher-viscosity oil that stays in the cut under load.

EP (extreme pressure) additives are the chemistry in a neat cutting oil that prevents the tool and workpiece welding together under the high temperatures and pressures of the cut. In operations like broaching, deep-hole boring and heavy tapping, the local pressure at the cutting edge is enormous, and a plain mineral oil will break down and allow metal-to-metal contact.

EP additives react with the metal surfaces under that load to form a sacrificial film that keeps the tool and work apart, which is why the Runcut CASF oils and the Millicut ranges in this category carry EP additive packages.

Without EP, an arduous cut galls, tears and destroys the tool quickly but with EP, the same cut runs clean and the tool lasts.

Chlorine was once a common EP additive in cutting oils, but it has environmental and disposal downsides (chlorine-containing oils are harder to dispose of and face tightening regulation).

A chlorine-free formulation achieves the same EP performance using alternative additive chemistry, which is why most modern neat oils, including the Runneat and Millicut CHF ranges here, are chlorine-free.

For most workshops it matters because it simplifies waste-oil disposal and improves operator acceptability, with no loss of cutting performance.

If your existing oil is chlorine-containing, a chlorine-free equivalent will usually match it on the cut but check with us first, because a direct swap on a critical operation is worth confirming against your specific material and cut.

Active sulphur is an EP additive that is particularly effective in ferrous cutting because it forms a strong protective film on steel and cast iron, which is why oils like Millicut CAS 14 carry it for arduous broaching and thread cutting.

The catch is that active sulphur can stain yellow metals (brasses, bronzes and copper) by reacting with them.

If your work is ferrous, an active-sulphur oil is a strong, economical choice.

If you machine yellow metals, you need an oil formulated to be non-staining (the Runneat and Millicut CHF ranges are explicitly non-staining with yellow metals).

Running an active-sulphur oil on brass will leave dark marks on the workpiece, so match the oil’s chemistry to the material you cut.

Sliding-head autos and multi-spindle lathes run at high spindle speeds on small-diameter bar and they demand a neat oil that penetrates a tiny cutting zone, drains fast, resists misting and does not stain the range of materials (steel, stainless, aluminium, brass) that these machines commonly cut. The Millicut CHF 6 and CHF 22 ranges are formulated precisely for this duty.

The differences are in viscosity and additive balance.

A lower-viscosity grade like CHF 6 suits fine, fast work on non-ferrous and cast iron, a slightly higher-viscosity grade like CHF 22 suits medium to high tensile steels and stainless.

Both are chlorine-free, low-misting and non-staining on yellow metals, which is what a sliding-head shop needs from a single oil.

When a neat oil is flung around a high-speed spindle, a fraction of it aerosolises into a fine mist that hangs in the air around the machine. That mist is what operators breathe and it settles as a film over everything in the workshop. A low-misting oil (with anti-mist additives that pull the aerosol back into larger droplets) dramatically reduces both.

Low misting matters for operator health and acceptability, for housekeeping and for the finish of parts coming off nearby machines.

The Runneat and Millicut CHF ranges we carry are all formulated for low misting, which is a worthwhile consideration on any high-speed machine running for long shifts.

Workpiece visibility is how clearly the operator can see the cut through the oil on the workpiece. A pale, low-colour oil lets the operator see the tool and the work clearly, while a dark oil obscures them. On precision and one-off work, being able to see the cut is genuinely valuable so that you can judge the finish, spot a problem early and set up confidently.

The Runneat and Millicut CHF oils are formulated to be pale and clear precisely for this reason. On a manual machine doing fine work it makes a real difference to confidence and accuracy but on a fully enclosed CNC it matters less, but a pale oil still helps when you are setting up or inspecting the cut through the door.

The flash point is the temperature at which an oil gives off enough vapour to ignite in air. A high flash point (the Runneat synthetic oils carry one over 200°C) means the oil is far less likely to flash or burn in the event of a tool crash, a spark, or a hot chip. It is a direct safety characteristic of the oil.

A high flash point also means the oil resists degradation at the cutting temperatures it sees in service, so it lasts longer in the machine before it oxidises or thickens.

On any machine running neat oil, especially unattended or overnight, a high-flash formulation is the safer and more economical choice.

A well-matched neat oil extends tool life by lubricating the cutting edge and reducing the heat and wear it sees in the cut. The EP and lubricity additives form a film that keeps the tool and work apart, so the edge cuts rather than rubs and the workpiece comes off with a better finish (which is why a neat oil is often specified where finish is critical).

The gains are most visible on the arduous operations (broaching, deep-hole boring, heavy tapping) where a marginal oil would see rapid edge wear and a torn finish.

The Runneat and Runcut ranges are formulated specifically to deliver extended tool life and improved finish on those operations, which is where they earn their place.

The neat oils that we carry are supplied in 20-litre drums or 205-litre barrels.

A 20-litre drum suits a single machine top-up, a trial of a new oil, or a low-consumption machine, whereas a 205-litre barrel is the economical choice for a machine that runs through oil steadily, where the per-litre cost is significantly lower.

If you are trying a new oil, buy a 20-litre drum first and confirm it performs on your work before committing to a barrel. Once you are settled on the right grade, the 205-litre barrel is the practical buy for ongoing use because it keeps a top-up reservoir on hand and reduces the unit cost.

It is not recommended.

Each neat oil is a formulated balance of base oil and additive package and mixing oils can destabilise that balance because the additives in one can react with or dilute the additives in another, leaving you with a blend that performs worse than either oil alone. Staining, misting and corrosion protection can all be affected.

When changing from one oil to another, drain the machine as fully as you reasonably can and fill with the new oil, rather than topping one onto the other.

If you must run a mixed charge briefly, plan to change it out soon as this can only ever be a stopgap, not a long-term choice. Our experienced, in-house engineers can advise on a compatible equivalent if you are switching brands.

Store drums and barrels indoors, upright and away from direct heat & cold and keep them sealed when not in use. Neat oils are stable for a long time if kept clean and dry, but water ingress from condensation or a drum left open in a damp shop will contaminate the oil and can cause corrosion issues in the machine.

When dispensing, use a clean pump or tap dedicated to oil because a pump that has been used for soluble fluid will carry water into the neat oil. Wipe the drum opening before drawing off and keep the area around the machine clean. Swarf and grit drawn into the oil reservoir accelerate pump and way wear.

A little discipline here keeps the oil serviceable for its full life.

Start with the operation and the material. For arduous ferrous work (broaching, deep-hole boring, heavy tapping and gear cutting) an EP oil like Runcut CASF 10 or CASF 32, or the active-sulphur Millicut CAS 14, is the right call.

For high-speed sliding-head or multi-spindle work across a mix of materials, a chlorine-free, non-staining oil like Millicut CHF 6 or CHF 22 is the standard.

Then match the viscosity to the operation: lower for fine, fast work, higher for heavy, slow cuts and also check that the oil is non-staining if you cut yellow metals.
