Frequently Asked Questions
Stainless steel and in particular austenitic grades (304, 316, 316L) presents several specific challenges for tapping:
Work hardening: austenitic stainless work-hardens rapidly when machined if the tap dwells, rubs, or slows the material hardens ahead of the cutting edge which increases cutting forces dramatically and causing tap breakage
High ductility & toughness: stainless produces long, stringy chips that wrap around the tap if not properly managed
Adhesion & built-up edge: stainless has a tendency to adhere to cutting tool surfaces, increasing friction and heat generation
Low thermal conductivity: heat generated in the cut stays at the cutting edge rather than dissipating into the chip or workpiece
Recommendations for tapping stainless steel:
Use a spiral flute tap for blind holes: the upward chip evacuation is essential to prevent chip packing
Use a GLT-1 PVD coated tap: the hard, low-friction coating resists stainless adhesion and reduces cutting temperatures
Use a rigid tapping cycle on the CNC machine: no dwelling at the bottom of the hole
Use appropriate cutting fluid: neat cutting oil or a high-quality semi-synthetic tapping compound
Do not use steam-tempered general-purpose taps in stainless for production work: tool life will be very short
