How To Select The Best Carbide Drill For Your Application

By Ruhana Miah

What is drilling?

Drilling is one of the most common operations in most engineering workshops.

Carbide Drills Vs HSS Drills

Carbide drills are commonly used for high-volume hole making production.

The increased tool cost can be justified on a cost-per-part basis. For deep high-volume holes, they are often available with internal coolant ducts, resulting in longer tool life and stable production.

With more and more customers converting to coated carbide drills from conventional HSS drills, the demand for a larger range has become more vital for our customers.

Carbide Drills For General Purpose Use

Like most tools for cutting metal, carbide drills have a general purpose range for machining a range of different materials.

To suit this requirement, we have the 1534SU03 (stub length 3XD) and 1536SU05 (jobber length 5XD) drills.

  • TiALN coated for increased tool life
  • Optimized chipbreaker
  • High rake angle
  • Designed to machine steel, stainless and cast iron
  • KDG303 PVD coated P10-P20/M10-M20/K10-K20 grade
  • Good wear resistance and toughness for wide application field
  • Through coolant and non through coolant options available
  • Available up to 8XD in selected sizes

Please see the products links below for more information

1534SU03 - 3xD stub drill
1534SU03C - 3xD through coolant stub drill
1536SU05 - 5xD jobber drill
1536SU05C - 5xD through coolant jobber drill

Most of our customers opt for this particular series based on general machining conditions.

Carbide Drills For Drilling Stainless Steel and Heat Resistant Alloys (HRSA)

Drilling more difficult to machine materials such as stainless steel or heat resistant alloys, a different specification of drill is required to ensure durability with high performance machining conditions.

To suit this requirement, we have the 1534UD03 (stub length 3XD) and 1536UD05 (jobber length 5XD) drills.

  • 1st choice for machining stainless steel and heat resistant alloys (HRSA)
  • Optimized design of the main and chisel edge preparation minimises the cutting pressure
  • High-strength and temperature-resistant coating extends tool life
  • Special centre cutting edge reduces cutting pressure by up to 25%
  • PVD coating with increased hardness, optimised thermal stability and a low coefficient of friction
  • Diameter range 3mm-20mm in stub and jobber lengths (3XD & 5XD)

Please see the products link below for more information.

1536UD05C - 5xD through coolant jobber drill

Carbide Drills For Machining Hardened Steel

When machining tougher steels over 40 Rockwell (HRC), we have a particular series dedicated for hardened steel drilling.

To suit this requirement, we have the 1534SH03 (stub length 3XD) drills.

  • Coated solid carbide for drilling high hardness steel (HRC 40-60) and higher tensile strength.
  • Small helical angle and large core design greatly improving tool rigidity.
  • KDG303 high performance coating for increased tool life.
  • Stub Length available(3XD).

Please see the products link below for more information.

Carbide Drills For Machining Non-Ferrous Materials

We also offer an extensive range of carbide drills to machine non-ferrous materials such as aluminium and plastics.

To suit this requirement, we have the 1105SC03 (stub length 3XD) and 1101SC05 (jobber length 5XD) drills.

  • Designed to machine materials with short chips such as aluminium, cast iron etc
  • Improved chip flow due to flute geometry and chip space
  • Superior finish and avoids built up edge
  • YK20F grade uncoated K20 carbide substrate for non-ferrous materials
  • Available in stub length (3XD) and jobber length(5XD)

Please see the products link below for more information

1105SC03 - 3xD stub drill
1101SC05 - 5xD jobber drill

We also have another range of carbide drills for cutting solid workpieces composed of Al Alloy.

  • Three-lipped structure can achieve high feed rate and prominent centering capability.
  • High machining reliability, suitable for poor conditions such as interrupted cutting.
  • YK30F grade uncoated K30 carbide substrate for non-ferrous materials.
  • Available in stub length (3XD).

Please see the products link below for more information.

Carbide Drills For Machining Deep Holes

Finally, we offer a wide range of coated carbide drills for deep hole drilling, these are available in 10xD, 12xD, 15xD, 20xD and 30xD.

To suit this requirement, we have the 1588SL drills.

  • For the machining of steel, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel and heat-resistant alloys (HRSA).
  • Double margin for high accuracy and stable machining.
  • Special flute design for less friction and good chip flow.

Please see the product link below for more information.
